To better appreciate his weapon choice, it’s important to first know more about its wielder, Might Guy. This is because in the Naruto Universe, shinobis (or ninjas) typically can make use of three jutsus; taijutsu, ninjutsu and genjutsu. Might Guy, however, exclusively uses taijutsu.

Of course, certain shinobis are more proficient with certain jutsus than others. To give an example, the Uchiha clan are excellent with Genjutsus, because of their bloodline with the sharingan eye.

Among the three jutsus, taijutsu is almost a staple among shinobis. After all, they have to be outstanding when it comes to fighting barehanded or with a weapon. Coupled with ninjutsu and genjutsu, a shinobi becomes a very deadly human weapon. It is often overlooked by shinobi that it is possible to master taijutsu.

This sets Might Guy apart from the rest. This is because Guy only makes use of taijutsu. He is so proficient in taijutsu, many fans could be unsure if he was able to use ninjutsu or genjutsu.

However, very few scenes in the anime showed that he could indeed use ninjutsu but for most of the time, Guy sticks with his taijutsu. He is incredibly gifted with his taijutsu that even Madara (a very powerful shinobi) himself praised him as the strongest taijutsu shinobi of his generation, during their fight between the two of them.

The shinobi world though is very dangerous and oftentimes, there are fights wherein physical contact must be avoided. As gifted as he may be, Guy still makes use of weapons if this need arises.

This is where Sōshūga comes into play.

How Often Does Guy Make Use of his nunchucks?

As gifted as Guy is with his taijutsu, his need for weapons apart from the basic kunai is quite minimal. There are not too many scenes in the anime where Guy made use of his nunchucks. This further boosts his reputation as a ninja who only makes use of taijutsu.

Do note that taijutsu does not involve weapons but only hand-to-hand combat. With just taijutsu, Guy can stand on his own. However, there were a few scenarios wherein he pulled out nunchucks to be with him in battle.

How often? There were only a handful of times. During most if not all of those fights, physical contact needed to be avoided. One of the most notable fights where he uses the Sōshūga, Guy’s personal nunchucks, is when Tobi’s identity is revealed to be Obito Uchiha.

What Does Sōshūga, Guy’s Nunchucks, Look Like?

Translated, Sōshūga means “Twin Attacking Fangs”. It’s a beautiful pair of nunchucks with handles carved to have the shape of a dragon head at its base. Along the body of the handle, it has scales on it as well. The nunchucks are a dark maroon color.

The Sōshūga Nunchucks

The Sōshūga was first seen being used by Guy during the fourth shinobi world war. With superhuman taijutsu, Guy can use the nunchucks like no other. With Sōshūga, he has incredible offense and defense.

He can deflect multiple kunais with Sōshūga and he was even able to smash a large rock with it.

What Inspired Kishimoto to have Might Guy Use Nunchucks?

If you’re a fan of the martial arts, there’s a high chance you know who Bruce Lee is. Bruce Lee is an icon in the world of martial arts. His skills are world-class and with his abilities, Bruce Lee was also able to star in multiple action films.

More than his skills and films, he is also well known for his philosophy. Among many things that make Bruce Lee an incredible icon is his skills with the nunchucks. He even made use of the weapon in some of his movies.

His genius brought him to popularity. We could even say that his popularity equal that of Michael Jackson’s, with music, but with martial arts. Renowned globally, he has made a huge impact in the world of film making and also martial arts.

A lot tried to mimic his personality or style. In many mediums, films, games, etc, some characters show great resemblance to Bruce Lee. To us, Might Guy is one of those characters. He even has a student called Rock Lee who can’t use ninjutsu, nor genjutsu, but only taijutsu.

Like Might Guy, Rock Lee was also incredible with taijutsu. In relation to nunchucks, we believe that the creator of Naruto thought of or was inspired by Bruce Lee when he made Guy, Rock Lee, and probably other characters.

With that in mind, Guy’s nunchucks were the chosen weapon for Might Guy being the iconic weapon of Bruce Lee as well.

Does Might Guy’s Nunchuck Style Have Any Special Abilities?

In the Naruto Universe, there are a lot of weapons with unique abilities. To give a few examples, the weapons of the seven ninja swordsmen of the mist are endowed with special abilities. One such weapon is the Executioner’s Blade.

The unique ability of the Executioner’s Blade is that it can heal or repair itself. With whatever damage it may acquire from battles, it restores itself to its original form by absorbing the iron from the blood of its victims.

With Sōshūga or his other nunchucks, we are not given a lot of opportunities to ultimately determine if the weapon does have any abilities. But so far, there hasn’t been any hints of it having any powers of its own. Much of Might Guys nunchucks’ glory has been heavily dependent on Guy’s capabilities.

If they do have any perks, however perhaps it’s that it’s made from a really strong material. We say that because his nunchucks have made a lot of damage, and withstood really powerful attacks. If it was made of just plain materials, it would shatter instantly in the hands of Guy. So, his nunchucks are resilient.

When Were Guy’s Nunchucks Used?

Guy was seen making use of nunchucks a couple of times. At one point, Guy used nunchucks to train Tenten, one of his subordinates. During Tenten’s training, he used plain black nunchucks.

Another fight he was seen using nunchucks in, was his fight with Kisame. Kisame is an incredibly strong opponent that Guy faced, during the 4th great ninja war. He is a member of the Akatsuki was ranked no less than rank S.

Nunchakus - Maito Gai (vs Kizame)

Each member of the Akatsuki can rival kages, with some members being even more powerful. To make things worse for Guy, Kisame wields a sword that once belonged to a member of the seven ninja swordsmen of the Mist.

As mentioned earlier, these swords of the seven ninja swordsmen have unique abilities. Among the seven swords, the one that Kisame has is regarded as the deadliest. Kisame’s sword, Samehada, is a sentient sword capable of leeching chakra from either its wielder or its victim.

With Samehada, Guy had to avoid physical contact by all means. Otherwise, he would risk losing a great deal of chakra which could lead to his demise. He reacted by pulling out his nunchucks.

Another fight where he used nunchucks was with Tobi, where he used his prized Sōshūga nunchucks. He resorted to useing Sōshūga because Tobi could phase through objects and any attacks. And this pair of nuncucks was Guy’s most resilient pair. Tobi could also be able to use his jutsu to transport anything to another realm.

This was how he was able to phase through different attacks. This is also why Guy had to minimize or avoid physical contact as not to have his limbs severed by Tobi’s transportation jutsu.

Who Else Was Able to Wield Sōshūga?

Throughout the anime, no one besides Guy was seen using Sōshūga. Not even Rock Lee, his student, was seen waving it around or using it in training or battle. The Sōshūga is simply just so elusive that it was only seen once during his fight with Tobi.

This opens up a lot for Sōshūga being such a mysterious weapon. It is subtle as Sōshūga can be easily identified as an ordinary weapon. After all, Guy has used regular nunchucks and only using Sōshūga once.

This can lead to Sōshūga being easily overlooked. Hopefully, we shall be able to see more and know more about Sōshūga. Until verified, we can really never tell if Sōshūga is more than just a weapon made of sturdy material.
