Everything to Know About The Kingdom Hearts Keyblade

March of 2002 saw a change in the way we look at video games. In an ambitious crossover spectacular of a game, Disney launched Kingdom Hearts, a single-player action rpg that stars all of the best characters. Working with Square Enix, Disney was able to leverage their timeless animated characters alongside the famous crews of Final Fantasy fame.

We follow the protagonist, Sora, as he is forced to leave his island home, losing his friends in the process. He teams up with Goofy and Donald Duck to save the worlds and find his friends. Sora would be just a regular kid with a big heart if it weren’t for his ability to wield a special sword, the Keyblade.

The Keyblade is no regular weapon, it has the power to change itself, it can lock or unlock many things from chests to the links between worlds, and it is also capable of performing as a powerful blade.

Where does the Keyblade Come From?

As important as it sounds, there has never been a definitive answer to where the Keyblade came from. Sora carries the Keyblade of the Realm of Light, specifically, as there are many keyblades in existence throughout the Kingdom Hearts series. The history of the keyblades is long, showing the various wielders using them to different ends.

Many of the inhabitants of the various worlds have had encounters with keyblades or keyblade carriers. Their experiences vary, showing that not all keyblades are made to perform good, rather the effect of the keyblade is driven by the one who uses it. It has been shown throughout the series that there was a great war that left behind a graveyard of keyblades.

The keyblades were made to hunt for the mythical x-blade, a weapon of great power that caused the above-mentioned war. Those who sought to possess the x-blade came against each other in a great battle the ended with the shattering of the blade. From then on, the keyblades were used to maintain the status of the worlds.

What are Keychains?

Everything about the Kingdom Hearts keyblade.

No matter what type of power is needed, the Keyblade can provide it. The adaptability of this weapon is beyond measure. When a keyblade wielder needs to amp up their magic or dial down their defense in lieu of more attack, they need only attach the right keychain.

The keychain not only modifies the stats of the blade, but it also changes the appearance of it. In the first Kingdom Hearts game, Sora gets these keychains by completing world events, namely relocking the barrier in whichever world he is in. Often these keychains take on an appearance similar to the area he received it from. For example, the keyblade from the Olympus Coliseum is designed in the art style of the Disney movie, Hercules.

It has been theorized that the keychains are linked to people or memories associated with their retrieval. As Sora completes missions, he makes friends, and in doing so the Keyblade becomes more powerful. There are exceptions, however, as some keychains can be acquired as loot from chests.

Who Can Wield a Keyblade?

Everything to know about the keyblade

Many characters in the Kingdom Hearts series carry keyblades, though the keyblades themselves seem to be drawn to those who have strong hearts. They do not necessarily pick those with good or bad hearts, just those who are rooted in their convictions either way. Though keyblades do not change allegiance often if the carrier has a lapse of faith it may choose a new owner. We even see keyblades returning to the hands of their chosen champion after having been taken by a rival.

In the first Kingdom Hearts, we even see it immediately change its choice in wielder. Towards the end of the game, we find that the blade was meant for Sora’s friend, Riku, but chose to abandon Riku in favor of Sora. The darkness fighting with the light in Riku has given him access to another keyblade that better suits his character, the Way to the Dawn keyblade.

Keyblades are able to be given to a successor by the people who wield them, despite the weapon normally choosing the owner. In this way, the blade can be passed down through those seen as worthy by the previous owner. When a keyblade is lost, it will remain dormant until found by one it will let carry it.

King Mickey (of course he’s a king! It IS a Disney game) delves into the darkness to find a specific keyblade that he wishes to close the way to the darkness with. In finding this blade, we are shown that the nature of the keyblade and that of who wields it do not always need to align for the weapon to release control to a carrier. The vision of this specific blade opens up a new line of questions, as it appears to be the polar opposite of the one that Sora carries. It is unclear if all keyblades have an opposing force existing in one of the many worlds.

What is a Keyblade Glider?

Kindom Hearts keyblade facts

Though only a select few of the keyblade wielders are able to use this particular power, the ability to transform a keyblade into a ship of sorts exists within the Kingdom Hearts universe. Those that are shown to have this particular ability are Terra, Ventus, and Aqua, though in Xehanort’s notes he mentions having done it as well. Each of the keyblade vehicles have similar abilities and action sequences, but they manifest in a different form depending on their owner.

Each glider is able to carry its wielder, even so far as to travel with them between worlds. Additionally, each warrior who is shown to have mastered this transformation is also able to attack with their glider, though the form of that attack is dependent on which shape it takes. For example, one is able to fire shots at its opponents while another actually rams into them.

This power seems to be inherent to the keyblade and not the manifestation of it. Any changes to the keyblade’s physical form by using keychains do not seem to impact its ability to become a glider. However, when they become a glider from a different form, they always appear to have been created by the original keyblade configuration; the colors and shapes reflecting that of the base blade’s shape.

Whether you want to put them on a bracelet, a keychain, or a cellphone case, these pendants have got you covered!

Why Did the Keyblade Choose Sora? Is Sora a Keyblade Master?

The keyblade that Sora wields is the Kingdom Key. Although he’s the current owner of it, he wasn’t the one that’s supposed to wield it was his friend and life-long rival, Riku, as it was bestowed to him by its former wielder, Terra.

With the events that unfolded during the first Kingdom Hearts game, it was shown that Riku was easily susceptible to the darkness. As this was happening, the Kingdom Key decided that Riku wasn’t fit enough to wield the Keyblade and saw that Sora was a much better candidate due to the amount of strength Sora’s heart was, which was resistant to the darkness.

Currently, in the series, Sora also shows that he has the qualities to become a Keyblade Master but wasn’t able to pass the exam to become one. This was shown in parts of the story where he wasn’t able to fully master his powers and lost the progress he made during the exam due to Xehanort’s evil plans.

Why Did Riku Get the Keyblade?

As said before, Riku was the supposed keyblade wielder to the Kingdom Key until the keyblade choose Sora due to how weak Riku’s heart was to the darkness. During the entirety of the game, he’s been using multiple keyblades that contain a variety of powers.

His first keyblade that was shown in the first game was “Soul Eater” while in Kingdom Hearts 2, he used the keyblade called “Way of Dawn”. It’s still unknown where he managed to obtain Way of Dawn though most fans do have their theories on how he managed to obtain it.

Though at some point in the series, he was able to grab hold of the Kingdom Key from Sora’s hands. This happened for a brief moment where Sora’s heart weakened when he lost all his friends, but Sora managed to get it back once his strength was restored with the help of all his comrades.

What is the Keyblade Graveyard?

The Keyblade Graveyard is a barren wasteland where key events in the Kingdom Hearts storyline occurred. It’s where the Keyblade War was fought on, which resulted in its current appearance, and the final area of the game where the heroes had their final battle with Master Xehanort.

The location is composed of rocky badlands that are filled with the keyblades that were owned by the keyblade wielders who fought during the keyblade war. During most of the series, several areas of the Keyblade Graveyard also became safe havens and training grounds for the villains of Kingdom Hearts.

With the amount of evil that was flourishing here, where Master Xehanort constantly visited it to create the X-Blade and where the Real Organization XIII eventually used it as their main base of operations, it’s no wonder that several key battles were fought here.

What are the Best Keyblades in Kingdom Hearts?

In every new game of Kingdom Hearts, there are always new keyblades that are introduced to the story with each of them having their unique powers and stats. Although there are a lot of worthy keyblades in every Kingdom Hearts game, there’s always one of them that ranks above all the others.

Divine Rose (Kingdom Hearts)

Can be found near the end of the game and possesses the same qualities as the Ultima Weapon. The Divine Rose shows off an absurd amount of power, making the strongest Keyblade in the first Kingdom Hearts game.

Decisive Pumpkin (Kingdom Hearts II)

Although there are a lot of extremely powerful Keyblades found in Kingdom Hearts II, the Decisive Pumpkin takes the cake for being the best one of them all. A well-balanced keyblade possessing stats with one of the strongest keyblade of the Kingdom Hearts franchise.

Zero/One (Re: Coded)

The Zero/One Keyblade can only be found in Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded, where its stats makes it the best Keyblade found in the game. Once this keyblade is fully upgraded and its stats are maxed out, it’s filled with several powerful offensive attacks from short-range to long-range battle.

Oathkeeper and Oblivion (358/2 Days)

Keeping these two Keyblades apart is impossible as both Oathkeeper and Oblivion should be used together. Each of these Keyblades possesses its types of strengths and weaknesses and with the option of dual-wielding them, it’s possible to create a well-balanced weapon to use for winning the game.

Unbound (3D: Dream Drop Distance)

It’s described to be the perfect keyblade in the game and is even filled with insane stats such as strength that surpassed the Ultima Weapon. The Unbound Keyblade possesses high tier strength and magic stats, making it the best Keyblade in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance.

Ultima Weapon (Kingdom Hearts III)

Considered to be the most powerful playable Keyblade in all of the Kingdom hearts franchise due to its immense stats. Although it was first introduced in the first Kingdom Hearts game, the Ultima Weapon became seriously powerful when reaching level 13 in Kingdom Hearts 3.

It has an ability called “Formchange” changing it to its ultimate form and obtaining massive power boosts, teleportation, and fast magic recovery.

How Long Ago was the Keyblade War?

One of the most important events that happened before the start of Kingdom Hearts was the Keyblade War. It’s where everything so much has been lost, and so much has been given birth during that moment. The destruction of the X-Blade, the loss of most of the Keyblade Wielders during that era, the creation of Keyblade Masters, etc.

The accurate number to how long the Keyblade War happened before the start of the series is still unknown. Some speculate that it goes back hundreds to even thousands of years, as everything that happened during that time was all said to be legends.

There are multiple stories regarding what happened during and after the Keyblade War. But there isn’t any living person in the series that has seen the event firsthand.

It’s all up to speculation as to when it happened. And, various fans have even come up with their theories on where it belongs in the timeline.

How to Draw the Keyblade?

Drawing a Keyblade is easy as all of them have the same basic form of a key, which gives you a general outline of what to make. You can draw existing Keyblades in the Kingdom Hearts series or you can even make your own. Though the difficulty will start to increase once you’re going to make a Keyblade with more intricate designs.

Here we’ll show you a quick step-by-step process in drawing a Keyblade.

  1. Look for a Keyblade that you want to make. Or if you want to make one of your own, go find a design that you can use as a model. Get a photo of it so you can use it as a reference while drawing.
  2. The handle is the easiest part to draw so sketch that one first. If you’re making an original then you can draw a box or an oval and put a line in the middle. You can proceed to add designs of your liking to give that cool factor in the drawing.
  3. Draw the hilt of the sword by making two narrow lines in the middle. You can then decorate the hilt by adding patterns around it such as stars, ribbons, or thunderbolts.
  4. Proceed to draw long narrow lines on top of the handle to create the blade. At the tip of it, add spikes on one side to make the teeth of the key.
  5. Draw the keychain by adding connecting ovals underneath the handle. At the end of the chain, draw a single shape or design on what you’re basing your key from such as a Mickey Mouse logo.
  6. Color your chain with the right colors used on the original design. Or, if you want to get creative, you can find use of your colors and add other designs to it to make your original design.

How Does Sora Hold the Keyblade?

Sora uses his keyblade like a sword where he uses slashing cutting moves against his opponents, hitting them with the opposite side of the Keyblade’s teeth. Throughout the series, he’s consistently shown to hold his keyblade in several ways both in battle and out of battle.

During a battle, whenever he’s in battle stance, he holds his keyblade with both his hands where he places it below his waist while doing a form ready for slashing. Whenever he’s running, he tends to hold his keyblade in one while placing it above his shoulder when out of battle. In battle, he runs by holding the sword with both of his stances while placing it at his side with the blade pointed upward.

This is also the same with his special fighting moves, all of them needing the same movements while having minor alterations every game.

Who are the Keyblade Masters?

The Keyblade War that was fought during the age of fairytales produced the first Keyblade Master which was eventually Called the Master of Masters. Through him, he was able to produce several keyblades into existence, giving birth to the next generation of Keyblade Masters.

Currently, in the game, there are 13 known Keyblade Masters in total. Some of the known characters who’re Keyblade masters are:

  • Master of Masters
  • Master Xehanort
  • Master Mickey Mouse
  • Master Aqua
  • Master Riku
  • Master Odin
  • Master Ira
  • Master Aced
  • Master Invi
  • Master Guka
  • Luxu
  • Master Eraqus
  • Master Yen Sid

Some of these Keyblade Masters have been long gone, even before the start of the series. Others, such as Master Yen Sid, Mickey Mouse’s mentor, is also a well known Keyblade Master but has already long retired from his position.

What is the Keyblade Master?

A Keyblade Master is a title given to a keyblade wielder who’s shown to have exceptional talent in using their keyblade. Having this title also allows you to gain recognition as one of the best Keyblade Wielders in the Kingdom Hearts World.

The history of Keyblade Masters begins way back during the Keyblade War, where a young boy would eventually become the first Keyblade Master and the Master of Masters. By studying the X-Blade, he was able to create his Keyblades where he gave it to several individuals. These new Keyblade Wielders would eventually become the next generation of Keyblade Masters.

To become a Keyblade Master in Kingdom hearts, the keyblade wielder must pass the Mark of Mastery Exam. Although passing this exam doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re the strongest Keyblade Warrior This is shown in the story where Master Xehanort, the strongest Keyblade Master, was beaten by Sora and Terra during their final battle.

Who are the 7 Keyblade Wielders of Light?

The 7 Keyblade Wielders of Light are a group consisting of some of the strongest keyblade wielders in the game. They were formed to protect the screen Princesses of Heart and prevent Xehanort from creating the X-Blade and accomplish his evil goals.

During their formation, they were in a back and forth struggle against Xehanort and his minions. Going through a lot of adventures, they managed to train themselves and improve their powers to go up against some of the strongest characters in Kingdom Hearts.

The original seven Guardians of Light include:

  • Sora
  • Riku
  • King Mickey
  • Lea
  • Kairi
  • Aqua
  • Ventus

In some parts of the series, the seven Guardians of Light were forced to find other key wielders after missing a few of their comrades. Some of the original guardians were replaced by key wielders like Terra, Roxas, and Xion.

How is Keyblades Made?

The origin of the Keyblade dates back before the great Keyblade war where the Master of masters was able to create some of the first     Keyblades in existence. Using his knowledge from his research on the X-Blade, he was able to extract the Keyblades from the hearts of each person.

Though current Keyblades are man-made and use a different method to create it, the forging process is still not clear as the series still hasn’t explained it yet. Most of the explanation given to how the Keyblade is made is mostly found in Xehanort’s notes where the history of the Keyblade War and where the source of a Keyblade’s power originates.

A Keyblade can also be repaired as shown in Kingdom Hearts III. Several characters had their blades broken such as Mickey’s Kingdom of D. It was repaired by fusing it with his previous Keyblade “StarSeeker”, where the two blades fused to become “Star Cluster”.

Who is the Strongest Keyblade Wielder?

Although most keyblade wielders tend to be seriously powerful in their own right, there hasn’t been a more powerful welder than the main villain in the series, Master Xehanort. By being the main enemy of Kingdom Hearts, he’s equipped with various powers where Sora and the other keyblade wielders need to overcome to beat him.

During most of the Kingdom Heart series, the key wielding heroes need to gain more experience and grow to beat him. He’s shown to be quite difficult to deal with due to the immense power that he wields due to how strongly connected he is with the darkness.

Due to this, Xehanort is equipped with some of the strongest weapons and powers throughout the series. Beating him requires a lot of perseverance by the key wielders and a lot of experience which makes him the strongest adversary throughout the series.

What Happened to the Foretellers after the Keyblade War?

The Foretellers were apprentices of the Master of Masters and we’re the ones who knew about the upcoming Keyblade War which led to the destruction of the world. Though they tried to prevent the war from happening, their actions inadvertently became the triggering factor for it to occur.

Not much is known of what happened to the Foretellers after the Keyblade War as there isn’t that much-recorded history of what they did directly after the battle. The only thing that we know is that they’re still alive as shown in the end credits of Kingdom Hearts III.

After the Xehanort’s defeat, we see Luxu, one of the Master of the Master’s apprentice, summoning the Foretellers from another dimension. With this, maybe we’ll see more of the upcoming sequel of the game.

What is the Keyblade Made of?

It’s a mystery to what type of metal or other kinds of materials are mixed to create a Keyblade but it’s not a stretch to say that it can also be made out of energy. The Keyblades used in the Kingdom Hearts world were all designed after the X-Blade, the most powerful Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts.

The Master of Masters was able to create the first Keyblades by reaching into the hearts of people, meaning some Keyblades are “forged” from a person’s heart. It’s not quite clear how this works but it’s safe to say that the power of the Keyblade will depend on where it came from.

Other Keyblades were created from other worlds or realms such as Sora’s and Mickey’s. Sora’s Keyblade was created from the realm of light while Mickey’s came from the realm of Darkness.

What Can a Keyblade Do?

Keyblades can be used for a variety of ways but its main purpose is to be used as a weapon for Keyblade Wielders. Aside from this, it can also be used for locking and unlocking almost anything, be it doors, loot chests, or even links to other worlds in Kingdom Hearts.

Each keyblade has its kind of design and purpose, giving the user unique abilities to fend off their opponents. Other types of keyblades can unlock the darkness inside one’s heart. It takes a lot of practice and experience for Keblade Wielders to unlock the powers of their Keyblade. This can be shown by the strength of Keyblade Masters as they’re able to use the full potential of their own Keyblade.

Although there’s already a lot of info regarding the various abilities that keyblades can give to its wielders, it’s still a mystery on how they work aside from how they choose their masters.

Types of Keyblades

There are three different types of Keyblades in Kingdom Hearts, where it’s easily explained in one of Xehanort’s reports back in Birth by Sleep. He wrote: “There are three families of Keyblades: the Keyblades of light we wield, the Keyblades of Darkness, and the Keyblades of Heart”. The report further talked about where each of these keyblade families originated.

Keyblades of Light originated from the realm of light, which most heroes use to fight against their opponents. On the opposite end, the Keyblades of Darkness are found in the realm of darkness. Both of these Keyblade families differ in origin but are the same naturally created weapons made from different realms.

The third one, on the other hand, was said to have been created right after the Keyblade War. Xehanort stated that the Keyblade of Heart is essential for someone to reach the Kingdom Hearts. To open its doors, a Keyblade of Hearts must be forged and there need to be seven hearts that are clear from darkness and made out of pure light.

What is the Keyblade Journey?

The Keyblade Journey is the various trials that every Keyblade Wielder has to go through to master the full potential of their Keyblade. Their journey will be full of hardships as they have to fight the forces of evil and undergo harsh settings for them to grow.

A good example of the Keyblade Journey is our protagonist, Sora. To get stronger so that he can defeat Master Xehanort and the forces of darkness, he had to undergo a lot of difficult situations to gain strength and meet his friends.

Through this, Sora was able to beat Master Xehanort and save lives from the various threats that were rampaging across each world.

What Does a Keyblade Look Like?

Every Keyblade in Kingdom Hearts has its unique design and abilities but all of them have the same fundamental features. The main takeaway from this is that every Keyblade is designed to look like a key that has a keychain built on the tip.

The Keyblade handle is the head with a guard on the sides and a hilt on the top. Most of the blades resemble that of a skeleton key where only the tip contains key teeth while other keyblades are also other Keyblades that are designed to look like specific types of lock keys.

Some special keyblades such as the Ultima Weapon resemble more of a sword than a key. Although the general frame and design of it can still give out hints of the basic structure of a keyblade.

Do Keyblades Level Up?

Aside from characters leveling up, you can also increase the level of your keyblade to give you an advantage in your next battles. Once you level up your keyblade, all of its base stats will increase and it can also gain new unique abilities when reaching certain levels.

All you need to do to level up your keyblade is to go to the Moogle Shop, which can be found in almost every world in Kingdom Hearts. Once you’re there, find the workshop option and find the “Keyblade Forge” to level up.

It’s important to note that upgrading your keyblade will require a bit of effort as you need to collect several materials to fulfill the requirements to level up. Though in Kingdom Hearts 3, all keyblades require the same materials to level up, making it easier for you to complete each keyblade upgrade.

Mickey and his Keyblade

In Kingdom Hearts, Mickey is a Keyblade Master and one of the Seven Guardians of Light, and a protector of worlds. He helps Sora and his friends to fight against the darkness and prevent the plans of Master Xehanort from coming to fruition.

During his time as an apprentice of Master Yen Sid, Mickey handled the “Star Seeker” Keyblade until he was able to turn into a Keyblade Master. During the events of Kingdom Hearts, he’s seen to be using the Keyblade “The Kingdom of D” which is a dark counterpart of Sora’s Keyblade.

Although being one of the supporting characters in the franchise, he still plays a significant role by becoming a helping hand for Sora. Mickey was also the first one to know about the threat of the Heartless and the one to create the Gummi Ship which allowed him and his team to fight monsters across other worlds.

What is Sora’s true Keyblade?

You’ve seen Sora use a lot of keyblades throughout the entire franchise but it’s beyond without a doubt that his true keyblade is the Kingdom Key. It’s one of the most iconic and also the first keyblade that you’ve seen Sora use throughout the entire Kingdom Hearts storyline.

It’s a special keyblade of the realm of light where it chose Sora to be its wielder as he was able to show immense strength in his heart. This keyblade canonical draws out the power that resides in Sora where he’s fully enveloped with the power of light.

Though another thing to know about is that this type of keyblade isn’t just exclusive to him. There are also several characters wielding the Kingdom such as Xion, Roxas, and Riku. Some of them have created their own Kingdom Key while others, like Riku, were former owners of it.

Which Keyblade is Best to Upgrade?

Every time you level up and proceed to another difficult stage, it’s always a must to upgrade your keyblade to battle your way through tougher opponents. Kingdom hearts is filled with high caliber keyblades, each of them having their unique ability.

In the Kingdom Hearts franchise, the strongest keyblade found in the game is the Ultima Keyblade. It’s a high-spec weapon filled with stats that can be considered to be a cheat weapon for most players.

The only problem with this keyblade is that it’s seriously difficult to obtain it. In Kingdom Hearts 3, you can only unlock this after you’ve finished the game and you still have to find various rare materials to synthesize it.

For most players, it can become a huge task but most of them are willing to do all the effort just to get the most powerful weapon in the game.

Conclusion:

The Kingdom Hearts keyblade info.

The Keyblade is an amazing addition to a video game genre that specializes in making blades more interesting. By adding a deep lore and hidden powers, keyblades are arguably the most interesting sword type to come from RPGs. Even further than that, the allusion to some sentience on the part of the blade, in its choosing an owner and deciding when to abandon them, make what could be just a neat weapon a really awesome piece of the story.

No matter who is wielding a keyblade, there is a story to be made from their interactions with each other and the world around them. Lucky for us, the series allows us to get behind the wheel and wield the blade ourselves. Would you choose to wield it for good?
