Sasuke’s Sword, The Kusanagi

What is Sasuke’s sword type?

Sasuke’s sword is a chokuto sword and was his personal weapon of choice used in all of Naruto Shippuden.  Sasuke would normally draw out this sword when he became serious about defeating his enemies. It had no abilities other than that of what sasuke could do with his chakra.

What is Sasuke’s Sword Name?

Sasuke referred to his chokuto as “The Kusanagi” which is used as a one-handed sword fit for slicing enemies with quick and precise slashes. The Kusanagi (or Grass-Mowing sword in the anime) is one of the three sacred treasures of ancient Japan that represents valor in Japanese history, in real life. This is the perfect weapon for Sasuke considering he had great courage against any enemy and faced them without fear.

Appearance of Sasuke’s Sword

What does Sasuke’s sword look like?

Sasuke’s chokuto, the Kusanagi, is a Japanese straight sword with a single sharp edge, rather than two. It isn’t curved like a katana, as the name suggests. Sasuke’s sword had a jet black handle with no hilt. Additionally, Sasuke’s sword fit into a black scabbard that fit his sword perfectly aligning with the handle. Sasuke, normally choosing black clothing, matched perfectly with the black handle on his sword.

How big is Sasuke’s sword?

The sword was a little over half the size of Sasuke in Naruto Shippuden. Sasuke’s height was 5 foot and 5 inches, so his sword was around 3 feet. His sword isn’t very thick, however, was very sharp. When Sasuke went to kill Orochimaru during his ritual, sasuke, with ease, chopped up the solid stone door that was blocking his way.

What type of sword is Sasuke’s sword?

As stated before, Sasuke’s sword is a chokuto, which is a Japanese, one sided straight sword. The chokuto blade was one of the first swords made in Japanese history. Chokuto were used for either stabbing or slashing but were best when used to stab and thrust, like a rapier would be used for. These types of swords were worn hung from their wielders waist. The Chokuto blade was adopted from China after it reached Korea, and then heavily made and used by Japanese once they were introduced there. The sword was first used by the Han dynasty in China.

Once curved swords started to become prevalent around the time of the mongolian empire, chokuto swords lost their popularity due to the fact that a curved sword was more effective in battle. Curved swords were more effective at slashing and slicing their opponents, than straight swords.

Kusanagi’s History With Sasuke

Who gave Sasuke his sword?

We don’t really know much about how Sasuke got Kusanagi. The only thing we know is that he showed up with it. This suggests that he got it himself at the beginning of Naruto Shippuden. Also, it is possible that with Orochimaru’s training, Sasuke took up the sword, influenced by Orochimaru’s own sword use. He has battled many famous opponents with the Kusanagi blade, such as Danzo, Itachi Uchiha, Madara Uchiha, a dozen samurai, and much more. He uses it in many of his fights.

Sasuke’s new sword in Boruto vs the Naruto Shippuden sword

Sasuke’s new sword is very close to the same look, as in Naruto Shippuden. In the Boruto series, the sword has a white handle and a goldish-bronze hilt. The sword’s sheath color is dark blood red and white. It could be that in Naruto Shippuden, Kishimoto may have tried to symbolize the color of Sasuke’s sword (black) with the fact that he had the dark heart of an avenger. Then, switching to the white handle, to symbolize that he has been saved by Naruto and became a protector instead. Kishimoto might have made the scabbard a dark blood red color because he wanted to show that Sasuke is a good person, but can still be very deadly if need be.

What color is Sasuke’s Sword?

The short answer though is that it is black in Naruto Shippuden and white after Naruto and Sasuke fight. Most of the time you see his white sword in Boruto.

Abilities and Traits of Sasuke’s Sword

Chidori and Sasuke’s Sword:

Sasuke’s sword can be used with one of his first learned ninjutsu techniques, the chidori ninjutsu. This comes in many forms and can be manipulated at Sasuke’s will. Using ninjutsu with a sword, is a form of kenjutsu, which is using any techniques with a sword in the Naruto universe. One of Sasuke’s most impressive abilities is to infuse his chokuto sword with chidori, making it a lightning sword. If Sasuke slashes or stabs an opponent while the sword of Kusanagi is infused with chidori, it paralyzes them by streaming the electricity into the enemy’s body.

Sasuke’s Susanoo Sword

Sasuke’s susanoo can utilize any weapon he would like. Before he had the complete Susanoo, Sasuke would use the Susanoo as a defense. When he was on the offense, he would manifest a bow and arrow out of the Susanoo to shoot at extreme speed at its target. Once he got the complete Susanoo, his weapon of choice changed to the chakra blade that he normally used, similar to the Kusanagi. The Susanoo, when the sword is manifested, is used when Sasuke is in great need of it, in most last resort cases. The type of dire circumstances he needs it include fighting the tailed beasts, summons like fully grown Gamakichi, and giant golems made with ninjutsus.

Sasuke’s Sword Skills

Naruto Shippuden Sasuke sword fightings style:

Sasuke’s fighting style is using the Kusanagi in one hand, and keeping the other hand free to use hand signs, kunai, summonings, and chidori. He likes to quickly feel out his enemy while using the blade to defend and counter with deadly swings. When he gets the chance to possibly get a killing blow, Sasuke likes to add a lightning style chakra nature into his sword to add a strong piercing power to seriously injure his opponent or make a fatal blow. When Sasuke infuses his lighting nature, his speed is increased exponentially which makes his skill far above the average ninja. If an opponent gets a safe distance he then uses his open hand to create a fireball jutsu or throw shuriken, then with his lighting nature and speed, quickly closes the gap between them and adds pressure.

Boruto Sasuke sword fighting style:

In the Boruto Next Generation series, sasuke only has one hand so he is unable to use the other one to throw shuriken, cast ninjutsu, or use any other ninja tools. But he is able to infuse his sword with electricity with the hand that is holding the sword, like before. While using his rennigan and his sharingan at medium and long range, he is still quite effective at close range with his sword.

Notable Events Where Sasuke’s Sword Play a Role:

Fighting Danzo of the leaf:

This is a perfect fight to explain why Sasuke uses his sword so much in his fightings style. Danzo and Sasuke started off the battle with extreme intensity, as Sasuke pulls Susanoo out right away to kill Danzo. However Danzo used a powerful forbidden ninjutsu called Izanagi. Izanagi is where you can manipulate reality in exchange for the sharingan eye to lose its light and also its sight. In order to use this ninjutsu, you would have to have the power of the Senju and the Uchiha clans together. Danzo had the Sharingan eyes which gave him the power of the Uchiha, and also had the First Hokage’s cells embedded into his body too, which is the power of the Senju. So every time Sasuke would “kill” Danzo, Danzo before death, would simply rewrite reality and appear in a different spot then where he was killed before.

For the battle to be won, both Sasuke and Danzo knew that it was whoever would last longer in time before Danzo had ran out of sharingan eyes. So the fight went on with Danzo, trying to get an opening to kill Sasuke, while Sasuke simultaneously, tried to exhaust all of Danzos eyes to finally kill him.

In the end of the battle, Danzo had one eye left to use Izanagi. Sasuke only having enough chakra to infuse in his sword with the lighting style for his last final attack, charged at Danzo while Danzo did as well. Both then stabbed each other in a fatal spot on their bodies. Danzo thinking he won by rewriting reality for himself, couldn’t due to Sasuke’s genjutsu that he secretly put on him moments before, making him think that he still had one eye left, but in reality, he used up all his eyes previously.

Genjutsu is an attack where the caster sends illusions to the opponent to trick them or trap them in their own minds.

They were both stabbed in fatal spots on their body, but Sasuke had a teammate that could cure him, named Karin, with her medical ninjutsu. Danzo, making a last resort to try and kill Sasuke along with him, self destructs his body with a Reverse Tetragram Sealing Jutsu that seals anybody in the blast radius away into a different dimension.

Infusing his sword with lighting nature was the only way to fight against Danzos wind style sword that he created. Sasuke needed the range that his chidori couldn’t reach and with the little chakra he did have, Sasuke would have been a goner without the sword.

Killer Bee vs Sasuke fight:

When Sasuke confronts Killer Bee for the Akatsuki, the fight kicks off with Suigetsu attacking Killer Bee with the executioner’s blade. Killer Bee then disarms Suigetsu taking the executioner blade from himself. Then Jugo, another of Sasuke’s companions then attacks Bee. Bee then scores a take down against him while still holding the executioner blade along with many of his other blades. Then Sasuke in his wild wild west tone, then says, “I’ll handle this,” and he proceeds to face off with Killer Bee, taking out the Kusanagi blade to fight him.

Killer Bee attacks first and Sasuke stops the executioner blade from spinning with his own sword. Killer Bee then gets into the 8 sword technique stance versus Sasuke and the Kusanagi. After a flurry of sword moves, Killer Bee then cuts Sasuke in multiple places.

Sasuke then attacks Killer Bee with the chidori blade move and killer be surprises them by blocking it. Then Killer Bee attacks and Sasuke is stabbed by two to three blades. Before Killer Bee can finish him off Suigetsu saves him with the executioner blade that Killer Bee dropped earlier. Then Jugo attacks Killer Bee giving Karin enough time to heal Sasuke. Soon after, Sasuke and his team then win another bout, causing Killer Bee to run away. Then Sasuke puts Bee into a sharingan genjutsu but when he doesn’t look, Bee clothes lines him, causing Sasuke to bleed yet again. Sasuke is then quite injured, which requires the help of Jugo infusing himself with him. After this, Bee is on the offensive for the rest of the fight and Sasuke and his crew end up fleeing. But when Sasuke gains his strength with Jugo as they are running, he uses amaterasu on him and the fight is ended, resulting in the capture of Killer Bee.

Speculation of Sasuke’s sword:

Perhaps Kishimoto made it less unique to show that Sasuke doesn’t need any more attributes considering he was so skilled, even being in the Uchiha clan.
