Wonder Woman has always been a very popular character even before her appearance on the big screen. She’s a very powerful hero, being a demigod and raised as an Amazon. As such, she also has enemies who are just as powerful or even more so.

In dealing with them, she has an arsenal of weapons that can keep up with her might and greatly help her when fighting. A lot of them have become iconic weapons and have also been part of her signature look.

With her weapons and equipment, she can come up with different fighting styles to best battle with her opponents. Both offensively and defensively, Wonder Woman is complete from having indestructible bracelets, a throwable tiara, and more.

She even has a lasso that can do more than subdue an opponent. However, in this article, we shall be dealing with a weapon that she has used in the movies but wasn’t really part of her arsenal in the comics.

If you’re not a big fan of the comics, you might have thought that the sword was really hers to begin with. However, it really wasn’t and even in the movies, she stole the sword for her to use as a weapon in her journey to find and kill Ares.

Godkiller, a fitting weapon for Wonder Woman, a hero with the mission to exterminate a god. But, just what really is Godkiller?

What is Godkiller in the Movies?

The sword, Godkiller, differs so much in the movies compared to its version in the comics. More than not really being meant for Diana’s use, the Godkiller in the comics is crazier. You’ll know why in just a bit but for now, we’ll deal with the Godkiller that was shown in the movies.

Well, technically, the Godkiller actually only appeared on Wonder Woman’s stand alone movie, Wonder Woman. Although our mighty amazon also appeared in Batman Vs Superman, the sword she actually used there was different.

If you watched the movie, you know the fate of the Godkiller. Ironically, the sword believed to be able to kill Ares, was destroyed by Ares. Regardless, the Godkiller, despite being casually destroyed by Ares, was extremely durable.

This was because before having used the sword against Ares, the Godkiller showed no visible damage. Diana used the sword rigorously as she traversed her way through a battlefield during World War I. Though other than that, no other abilities of the Godkiller was displayed. It was a very durable and sharp sword that was just believed to be mystical. It might have been but it wasn’t powerful enough against Ares.

What Does Godkiller Look Like in the Movie?

In the movie, Wonder Woman, the Godkiller is a double edged straight blade. It has runes or incantations written along its blade with two beasts holding it by their mouth as the guard’s design.

From guard to pommel, the sword has a rustic gold color. As mentioned earlier, the design of the guard takes the form of two dragons holding the blade by their mouths. Its handle is cleverly shaped like the two dragons’ bodies and the pommel as their tail. The design is very different compared to that of its design in the comics.

What Are the Abilities of Wonder Woman’s Sword?

Because Diana was not able to use the Godkiller for longer, we can’t tell for sure if the Godkiller has any more abilities. As far as the movie is concerned, the sword is simply incredibly sharp and durable.

Its mystical properties make the sword indestructible against almost everything. It can withstand bullets, concrete, can pretty  much cut everything in half and may never blunt. The sword’s only weakness shown was that it can be destroyed by an Olympian god.

The Godkiller in the movie and the comics is different not only in terms of its design but also with their origins. In the movie, it was told that it was Zeus who left the Godkiller to the amazons. This was after Ares killed all the other gods.

Zeus was able to defeat Ares but as what he said, Ares returned. He left the Godkiller to the amazons so they may have a fighting chance against Ares. As what was revealed to the movie though, the Godkiller was actually powerless against Ares.

How Did Wonder Womans Sword End Up with Diana?

Long before Diana was a child, she was always told about the story of Zeus, Ares and the other gods. She was told how everything was created including how the sword came to be. When Steve Trevor accidentally made his way to Themyscira, he ended up leaving the mystical island with Diana.

Diana’s departure was really more of an escape though. She wanted to destroy Ares so much that she left her homeland. When Diana decided to leave Themyscira with Steve to hunt down Ares, she made sure that she would be prepared.

She stole a set of armor, a shield, grabbed the lasso of truth and the one thing that can kill Ares, the Godkiller. She was successful in leaving Themyscira and she was able to fulfill her journey of facing Ares with the Godkiller.

What Happened to the Godkiller Sword?

Diana initially thought that Lundendorff was Ares. Ludendorff put up a great fighting being able to go toe to toe with Wonder Woman. However, Wonder Woman proved to be the stronger fight and after killing him with her sword, she instantly realized that he wasn’t Ares after all.

Not long after, she was able to encounter the real Ares. She tried to stab him with the Godkiller but blocking the sword with just his palm, Ares completely extinguished the blade of Godkiller. Still, Wonder Woman came out victorious against Ares even without the sword.

What is the Godkiller in the Comics?

The Godkiller in the comics is very different to say the least. To start, the Godkiller didn’t belong to Wonder Woman. It belonged to a different character and surprisingly, its owner wasn’t a hero. The Godkiller belonged to a supervillain, Deathstroke.

Still, Wonder Woman played a huge part with Deathstroke’s mission involving the Godkiller. If in the movie the Godkiller existed to kill Ares, in the comics, the Godkiller’s purpose was to kill a different being.

Although a different entity, the target was still godly, a mad titan named Lapetus. The Godkiller that was shown in the movie pales in comparison with the one used by Deathstroke in the comics.

Deathstroke’s Godkiller is much more powerful. It had a lot of different abilities and truly looked like a divine weapon. It was so powerful that even though Deathstroke is just a mere human, he was able to trade blows with Wonder Woman, Lapetus and even SuperMan himself!

The Godkiller sword in the comics was forged by Hephaestus. He made a deal with Deathstroke and gave Deathstroke the sword. The deal was for Deathstroke to assassinate Lapetus. What made the task complicated was that Lapetus was locked up in Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s home island.

What made this even more complicated was that after locating Lapetus, Deathstroke failed to realize the danger he unleashed. This was until Wonder Woman stopped him in his tracks and fought with him on the spot.

How Powerful Was Wonder Womans Sword in the Comics?

Deathstroke may have superhuman strength, speed and reflexes but against godlike beings, he still would be no match. This was until he gained possession of the Godkiller. While on his mission to kill Lapetus, he stumbled upon Wonder Woman.

Because Deathstroke unknowingly liberated Lapetus, this angered Wonder Woman and she attacked him. The two fought while also arguing about what Deathstroke had done. Surprisingly, with the Godkiller, Deathstroke was able to take on Wonder Woman.

The Godkiller even hit Diana so hard that she got knocked way back. Ultimately, Wonder Woman managed to overpower Deathstroke and entangled him with the Lasso of Truth. After getting on the same page, the two finally decided to fight together against Lapetus who at that time, already regained much of his powers.

It wasn’t long until Superman also came to the scene and attacked Deathstroke thinking he was an enemy. With the Godkiller, Deathstroke was able to trade blows with Superman. At one point, Deathstroke was even able to restrain Superman.

Wonder Woman ended their fight by telling Superman that Deathstroke is not the enemy. In the end, Deathstroke killed Lapetus fulfilling his mission.

What Are the Abilities of Godkiller in the Comics?

As mentioned earlier, the Godkiller used by Deathstroke in the movies has several abilities. This enabled him to become so much stronger than he already was. The Godkiller, as the name suggests, was made to kill godly beings.

As such, it had different abilities for Deathstroke to take on anyone or anything. Being a master assassin, Deathstroke had no problems being excellent with using the weapon. But there’s more to the weapon than he anticipated.

Here are the different abilities of the Godkiller:

Shapeshift – As a god killing weapon, the Godkiller can take any form, so the wielder can always have an advantage. This was shown when Superman encountered Deathstroke. The two trade blows and the Godkiller changed its form becoming like roots that entangled Superman.

The Godkiller can delve deep into the thought of its wielder and change its form to suit his or her fighting style. If not, it changes form simply to adapt to the situation. This ability of the Godkiller wasn’t shown too often.

If Deathstroke had more time to master the sword, he might have been able to put more use of its shape-shifting ability. There might almost be no limit to what the Godkiller can do in terms of its shape-shifting capacity.

It Can Change its Weight – Although changing its weight can have something to do with shapeshifting, the sword can actually change its weight even with its default form. With a very light but strong weapon to swing around, the Godkiller helps out in increasing the speed and accuracy of its wielder also prolonging his stamina in combat.

Eldritch Energy – The Godkiller in the comics has eldritch energy about it. This Eldritch energy helped strengthen Deathstroke in battle. It guided and partially controlled Deathstroke enabling him to move more swiftly, react more quickly and attack more powerfully.

It Reflects Attacks – The tip of the Godkiller is able to absorb any attack and redirect it to an opponent. It doesn’t only redirect attacks at full power but it does so with twice the destructive force.

This explains how Deathstroke was able to go toe to toe with Wonder Woman and Superman.

Sentient – The Godkiller with its Eldritch energy is sentient or at least semi-sentient. When Deathstroke wielded the Godkiller, it often tried to attack on its own accord. Sometimes, it even controlled Deathstroke so he could become a more fearsome fighter helping him out by making better attacks and transforming on its own.

Can Be Recalled – Much like Thor’s Mjolnir or Stormbreaker, Deathstroke’s Godkiller can also be recalled at will. If he ever loses the sword or if he throws it, he can always have it back in his hands right away by recalling it.

Can Repair Itself– A lot of very powerful weapons are said to be indestructible. But when faced with another weapon that is just as powerful or even more powerful, one often shatters. This is where the Godkiller is beyond most if not all other weapons.

While the Godkiller may be shattered or destroyed, it can always reform itself. This means that the Godkiller can never really be truly destroyed. Along with the ability to recall it, the Godkiller can always find its way back to its owner.

Can Collect Memories – Another unique advantage of having the Godkiller is that it can collect memories from a divine source and transfer the data it gathered to its wielder.

Which Godkiller is Stronger? Diana’s or Deathstroke’s?

Diana’s Godkiller is extremely durable and sharp. However, Deathstroke’s Godkiller is way more than just being sharp and long lasting. Even if Deathstroke doesn’t use any shapeshifting abilities, it can simply return Diana’s Godkiller’s attack with twice of its own power.

As we saw in the movie, Diana’s Godkiller didn’t stand a chance against Ares. It’s blade easily got extinguished as it plunged into Ares’ palm. Meanwhile, Deathstroke’s Godkiller was able to handle Wonder Woman, Superman and Lapetus. It served the battle and just has way too much abilities compared to the simplicity of Diana’s Godkiller.

Though, even if Diana’s Godkiller may prove to be inferior compared to that of Deathstroke’s, she still has an arsenal of weapons she can use in addition to her sword. Also, Diana will already be too overpowered if she gets a Godkiller with similar capabilities as the one that Deahtsroke acquired.

Diana is a demi-god and a trained amazon. Although her sword failed her in the movie, she still prevailed. Also, in the comics, while fighting against Deathstroke with his Godkiller, Diana still managed to win against him.

Perhaps we are yet to see more of the Godkiller that Diana once possessed. Perhaps it wasn’t the true Godkiller and one more powerful will be forged for her. Regardless, we hope you learned something new about the sword Godkiller from both the movie and the comics.
